As I reflect on the honor of receiving the “Outstanding Young Professionals Award” from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, a rush of emotion floods through me. This recognition is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the collective efforts of those who have supported and guided me along the way. It is a reminder that we need the help of those who lift us up, amplify our voices, and encourage us along the way,

In a world where imposter syndrome often feels like an unwelcomed companion, this recognition feels like a warm embrace, reassuring me that my efforts haven't gone unnoticed. But as I reflect on this achievement, I can't help but acknowledge the bittersweet reality that highlights it.

Fundraising, a realm traditionally associated with women's compassion and empathy, paradoxically sees a glaring gender disparity at its leadership helm. While women make up much of the workforce in this field, it's disheartening to see a disproportionate number of men occupying CEO and Executive Director positions. It's a contrast that speaks volumes about the systemic challenges women face in breaking through the glass ceiling, even in sectors where they are the driving force.

And, as a neurodivergent woman navigating this landscape, the journey has been anything but straightforward. Yet, amidst these sobering truths, there's a glimmer of hope. As I look around, I see a growing movement of women like myself, unapologetically carving out space for ourselves at the table. We're challenging the status quo, advocating for equal representation, and amplifying each other's voices in a chorus of solidarity.

Receiving this award isn't just a personal victory; it's proof of the resilience and tenacity of women in fundraising and beyond. It's a reminder that despite the obstacles we face, we're capable of achieving greatness and making a lasting impact in our communities.

So, as I celebrate this moment, I do so with a sense of determination and purpose. I carry the torch passed down by the trailblazing women who came before me, and I pledge to continue their legacy by advocating for gender equity and empowering the next generation of female leaders.

To my fellow fundraisers, particularly the women who navigate this terrain with grace and grit, I salute you. Let's continue to defy expectations, shatter stereotypes, and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. After all, the world could use a little more of our empathy, compassion, and wit.

Santana is a neurodivergent, dynamic, and enthusiastic woman with 14 years of dedicated experience in the nonprofit sector through professional roles and extensive volunteer work. Her journey has been marked by a commitment to fostering positive change and creating inclusive spaces.
